How to merge a foreground and a sky in astrophotography

Most striking nightscapes are two photographs pretending to be one: an exposure for the land and an exposure for the sky. Here's why that's normal, how to do the foreground and sky merge by hand in Photoshop, and where a dedicated tool earns its keep.

Why merge at all?

The sky and the ground want opposite things from your camera. The sky is moving, so its exposures must stay short enough that stars don't trail, and you build depth by stacking many of those short frames. The ground is standing still, so it can take everything the sky can't: a much longer exposure, a lower ISO, a smaller aperture for depth of field, its own focus point, even a different hour of the night when a little twilight still shapes the rocks. Shoot each subject the way it wants to be shot and you end up with two plates that need to become one image.

An honest caveat first: you don't always need this. A dual-stream stack that aligns the sky on the stars while holding the foreground still often produces a single frame where both halves are clean enough, especially with a close, simple foreground. Blending is for when the ground genuinely needs its own exposure, or when you're compositing a sky shot at a different time (label it honestly if you do). The manual method, start to finish

Everything below is stock Photoshop. No plugins required, and it genuinely works; photographers have shipped beautiful merges this way for years.

1. Align the plates

Put the sky plate and the foreground plate in one document as two layers. If both came off the same locked tripod, they'll already sit within a pixel or two; nudge with the arrow keys at 100% zoom until the horizon features line up. If the framing shifted (you refocused, you bumped the tripod, the plates are from different sessions), use Free Transform on one layer to rough it in. Perfection isn't required away from the horizon; the seam is the only place alignment shows.

2. Build the mask along the horizon

Add a layer mask to the top plate and define where sky ends and land begins. Two workable routes:

  • LLuminosity selection. At night the sky is usually brighter than the land, so a channel-based or Select Color Range selection can rough out the split for you. It's fast on a clean ridgeline and hopeless on anything intricate.
  • BHand-painted mask. A soft black brush at low-to-moderate hardness, painted along the horizon at 100–200% zoom. Slower, but you control every inch, and on complicated horizons you'll end up here anyway.

3. The edges are the real fight

A bald ridgeline takes five minutes. Trees, grasses, and rock spires against the sky are where merges go to die, because the boundary isn't a line, it's a fringe: branches thinner than your brush, gaps of sky inside a canopy, twigs that are half sky and half tree in a single pixel. Select and Mask with a small refine brush helps; so does zooming way in and accepting that some pixels are a judgment call. Keep the mask edge slightly soft (a hard edge screams "cut-out"), but not so soft that sky glow bleeds down into the treetops.

4. Match color and tone by hand

Here's the part most tutorials skate past, and it's genuinely the harder half of the job. Your two plates were shot at different shutter speeds, maybe different ISOs, maybe an hour apart under changing airglow. Their blacks don't match, their midtones don't match, and the air just above the horizon is a different color than the land just below it. A perfect mask with mismatched plates still looks like a composite.

The manual fix is patient work with Curves and Levels clipped to one plate: sample a midtone patch just above the horizon and one just below, nudge the ground plate's tone until the two read as the same night, then chase the color channels the same way. Match the black points first; a foreground with milky blacks floating under an inky sky is the most common giveaway. Expect several rounds of stepping back, squinting, and adjusting again.

The test that matters: flip the image horizontally and look at the horizon like a stranger would. If your eye snags on the seam, the tones don't match yet, no matter how good the mask is.

Where the manual method hurts

  • Edge halos. Get the mask feather slightly wrong and every ridgeline grows a bright or dark rim. You often only see it after sharpening, or in a print.
  • Midtone color mismatch. Blacks are easy to match; the subtle warm-cool disagreement in the midtones is what quietly says "composite" to a careful viewer, and it's tedious to chase by eye.
  • The mask never stays done. Re-edit either plate (a new white balance, a curve, star work) and the seam changes character, so you're back in the mask refining edges you thought were finished.
